Old Basketball Rules

I researched some old rules for basketball and I found some pretty funny ones that I will share. Back when they played 6 on 6 they were not physical at all. Even if they touched them it would be a foul. There was no shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping. These days when we girls play basketball it is very physical. You end up have scratches, bruises, bleeding, and many injuries. There was only one foul given in this game. If you fouled the second time you would get ejected from the game. You couldn't get a sub player to go in for them. If you side had more then 3 fouls then the other team got a point. These days when we fouled we are allowed 5 fouls and our team gets 7 before we go 1 and 1. One and one is where a team gets 7 fouls and the person that got fouled get to shot 1 first and if they make it they get another for up to a total of 2 shots. If a team has a total of 10 fouls they get to shoot 2 shots no matter what. The umpires can call a foul on the team if they are playing delayed game. This meaning that they are not looking for a basket they just want to pass the ball. So they can keep the game in there favor. When we play these days delayed game is very common. We have played it many times so we can stay ahead of our opponents. These are some of the rules that changed from the first time that basketball came out to the current days.

Getting Into the Season

Our Newell-Fonda basketball team has played 4 varsity games. We have come a ways from the beginning of the season, but we have a long ways to go. We played Spencer our first game and we did really well. We came out with very good energy and enthusiasm. We worked hard and came out with a win. After that we played at St. Marys. This was a very good learning experience for our team. This was a team that we could try our different plays on and that i could try my moves on. This game was very important in our learning process. The next game that we played was against Sioux Central. This game was very exciting. We went into overtime with the score 53-53. We came from behind with Renee Maneman scoring the three pointer that brought us into overtime. When we were in overtime Renee hit the three to win the game for us. Our last game that we played was against Alta-Aurelia. It was very intense. The refs called really really bad calls. We ended up losing the game, but next time we will win the game.

Starting the Season

We have had two weeks of practice so far. They have been strenuous, tiring, and very productive practices. We have learned a lot in practice. Together as a team we have become a whole. We play together very well, although there are still things to work on and to get better at. These practices are making us better for our first game on Tuesday. We also have a jamboree this Saturday at six thirty. It is against Ridge View.

~ Starting Basketball ~

Basketball starts today. I am expecting a very hard and tiring practice. I know that the practices will be worth it in the end. The feeling you have when you know you have done good is the best feeling in the world. When your season starts on a high it will end on a high. The feeling when you get to state is a feeling of accomplishment. So girls lets start and end this season right :D
